The Waterloo Career Center is an opportunity for Waterloo, Iowa high school students, and some surrounding schools, to explore 14 different career programs. Students will experience a competitive advantage and hopefully discover their passion. Jeff Frost is joining us this week to tell us all about the career center, what it offers students and the community, as well as how you can get involved.
Jeff is entering his 31st year in education. He is a graduate of Wartburg College, where he majored in History, with an education and coaching emphasis. His first teaching position was with the Vinton-Shellsburg Schools, where he taught high school history and government for ten years. He was also the head wrestling coach and assistant baseball coach. In 2000, he became assistant principal and athletic director at Waterloo West High School, a position he held for 10 years. In 2010 he was named the 3rd Director of Education for the Cedar Valley Catholic Schools in Waterloo. He held that position for 3 years. In 2013, he was named the Director of Secondary Education for the Linn-Mar Community Schools. He held this position for four years. For the last four years he has been the Executive Director of Professional Technical Education for the Waterloo Schools. As part of this position, he oversees the Waterloo Career Center.

July Service
This month Rotary Club of the Cedar Valley will be partnering with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Now through August 8th, we will be collecting donations for personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper. You can bring items, or money for this collection. Donations can be brought to the club meetings or can be dropped off at Cynthia's house.
We will also have the opportunity to volunteer at the food bank. Tuesday, July 21st volunteers can help from 6 - 8pm. We are looking for 8 - 10 people to fill the shift. If you aren't available to make this date, but still would like to volunteer there are other options on the page to sign up for. Sign up at the link below!
Once again, we will be collecting HyVee receipts for Orchard Hill Elementary School. The Cash 4 Students program gives area schools $1 for every $250 in receipts submitted! Receipts can be brought to each meeting and given to Cynthia.
Receipts must be from the Cedar Falls, Waterloo or Waverly Hy-Vee food stores or gas stations.
Do you need a Rotary polo or t-shirt?
Members are able to order a Nike polo, or t-shirt to wear at service projects and around town. Each polo is $38 and t-shirts are $10. You can email Mike Reyhons at the link below with your order. We will coordinate invoicing once you place your order.
Waterloo's new police chief Joel Fitzgerald joined us to tell us about how his history working as a police officer and now as chief has shaped him to be able to come into our community at an emotionally charged time of conflict and change and start his leadership on a positive note. He marched in our protest here in Waterloo with his fellow officers to humanize what the police badge and uniform represent , especially to marginalized communities. He has also worked with his officers to establish reforms, emphasize operational planning, create a consistency of standards of interaction, and provided them with Crisis Intervention Training. Chief Fitzgerald hopes to provide a good example, build credibility, listen, and overall ensure that our local police are seen as guardians of the community and that every community member feels safe.
Rotary is not just a club you join. It is an invitation to endless opportunities. It opens opportunities to serve in a project as big and historic as End Polio Now and also in a small community project, where you just plant a tree. It opens opportunities for you to live a richer, more meaningful life, with friends around the world, based on our core values. Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone, somewhere.
The 2020-2021 theme is: Rotary Opens Opportunities.
